| My research investigates the nature of policy adopted by the United States, the main actor behind the evolution of a peculiar status of Taiwan post Second-World War, to maintain the unique status of Taiwan. Taiwan is a de facto nation-state but not an independent country. The mainland China claims Taiwan to be part of its territory, but has no sovereign control over it. During the presidency of George W. Bush Jr. (2001 -2008), the period of concern in my thesis, U.S. policy towards Taiwan reflected a sharp departure from the previous administrations. The major thrust of President Bush policy toward Taiwan was against any "unilateral attempt by either of the parties – China and Taiwan – to alter the prevailing status quo." The study aims to interrogate the question – why does the U.S. advocate observance of status-quo in the Taiwan Strait? The main purpose of this research is to have a comprehensive and critical understanding of polices and tactics made towards Taiwan and China's reaction against them during Bush Presidency. | |
